   It's a vital amalgam that would have pleased the forward-thinking Byrd, whose own '70s funk-jazz albums are an obvious touchstone for Croker on his hypnotically enlightened effort Escape Velocity. He championed this sound on his Dee Dee Bridgewater collaboration, Afro Physicist, and he pushes it to the limits on this follow-up.

   Trumpter and composer Theo Croker is back and back with a bang! ‘Escape Velocity’ is an album title that aptly sums up a lot of the hard, frantic funk edged jazz blowouts here and with a generous 15 tracks it’s hard to pick out one defining moment – the blend of hard bop and spiritual with thundering funk undertones and rapid tempos will please fans of Kamasi Washington and Myron Glasper in particular.
